TomWright commenting on the Bible and evil saya that the Bible "tells a story about the Creator's plan to put the world to rights, a plan which involves a people who are themselves part of the problem as well as the bearers of the solution."
Which is pretty much the way that I have tended to see it. I sometimes feel that a lot of criticism of Christian faith based on the problem of evil actually misses some of the point in imagining that, in Christian terms, we are arguing that heaven has already arrived and all is perfect. It seems to me that one line of reply is that if there were no evil then in Christian terms 'heaven' would be happening universally now which would lead to the further question, if the world was such that evil were excluded would you or I be in it? The implication of that is in order for us to have a chance to be part of heaven, a way to rid us of our 'heaven-wrecking' tendencies is needed .... Thanks to David Robinson in alerting me to Tom's article.
