Marriage makes you boring, says survey

Right; this has got me cross. I'm cross that the assumption underlying it is that going out is fun and not going out and spending money is boring. Who says? It a cultural prejudice and an ignorant slur on people who simply develop different priorities in life.

Let's in any case examine this assumption that 'going out' is fun and not boring. Let me see ... going out with people who increasingly make inane conversation about trivia = fun? Being in places where you can't hear in any case whether they do have something interesting to say is fun? Drinking so much that you can't recall whether you had fun, is fun? Being embarrassed because you do stupid things is fun? Vomiting on the pavement is fun? In fact, it seems to me that the only way for most of this kind of activity ends up being fun is [a] because there is an unquestioned meme telling us that it is fun and [b] because you have to drink so much alcohol that trivia becomes funny and you manange to lose enough inhibitions to feel kinda sentimentally close to the people you're with, which is nothing more than your basic human bonding mechanisms coming out to play becasue a whole load of other higher functions have gone off-line. Fun? Puh-lease.

I know that there are other ways of going out than what I've alluded to above, but usually 'going out' means pub crawl or clubbing [= pub crawl with music and bouncers].

Let's also redefine fun; fun is learning to handle the limitations you have in life creatively, fun is developing a relationship. Fun is seeeing new human beings into the world and helping them to grow up. Fun is learning to be a kid again with your own kids. Fun is relearning to delight in simple things and seeing the world through another's eyes, especially if that other is a kid.

In any case, why is 'fun' the big thing? What's wrong with contentment? Or satisfaction? Or rest? Or any one of loads of other states that are less hyped up than fun bu nevertheless quite good to be in?

Marriage makes you a bigger person and weans you off shallow definitions of fun and boring.
Bet the article was written by a single or a wannabe single.

I got a response from my MP which got me kind of mad. You'll see why as I reproduce it here. Apologies for the strange changes in types...
