[Footprint] How Renewable are Renewables?

Now there's a weird question!

How renewable are renewables?

OK - so the energy produced from renewable sources is renewable BUT is the method of production of that energy sustainable?

Let's reframe that point to try and understand it:
We have little doubt that the electricity produced by the rotation of a wind turbine is thanks to the renewable source of energy that we know as 'the wind'. However, how are we going about extracting that wind energy? Well, we are manufacturing wind turbines, installing them and maintaining them. So how are we doing that? Are we using entirely renewable sources of energy to power that entire process?
  1. Is the mining of the raw materials powered by renewables?
  2. Is the transportation of the raw materials powered by renewables?
  3. Is the processing of the raw materials powered by renewables?
  4. Is the assembly of the components powered by renewables?
  5. Are the sales procedures of the wind turbines powered by renewables?
  6. Is the transportation of the wind turbines powered by renewables?
  7. Is the installation of the wind turbines powered by renewables?
  8. Is the maintenance of the wind turbines powered by renewables?
  9. Are the lives of all the people involved with every stage of that process entirely powered by renewables?
  10. Am I riding on a flying pig powered by renewables?
So perhaps renewable production, especially on a mass production scale (where market competitiveness matters) is not as renewable as we thought?

Aaaargh!
