I've only just come across this as a design concept, but it seems to have a lot to commend it in energy savings, I wonder if it could be an earthship design too in the sense of being covered in grass etc.

Yes, a Monolithic Dome can be buried. I have come across (on the web) at least one house and one school built in this fashion (as a Monolithic Dome). This page talks about the idea, but suggests it may not necessarily be advantageous to do so (as the Monolithic Dome already has many of the same advantages inherent in its design).
