Finally, after contacting Chelsea FC and cc'ing Samsung. I notice too that they routed it through the appropriate regional office (in Gateshead) ...
Dear Customer,
Thank you for getting in touch and raising an important issue regarding
sourcing in Indonesia.
We take all of these matters very seriously and have been engaging with
Friends of the Earth and the broader electronics industry on this issue for
some time. We are also undertaking a thorough investigation of our supply
chain in the region to better understand what is happening, and what part we
play. While we do not have a direct relationship with tin suppliers from
Bangka Island, we do know that some of the tin that we use for manufacturing
our products does originate from this area, which sources much of the
electronics industry.
We believe that our work on this issue should be collaborative, and as a
responsible business we are contacting suppliers, industry bodies and
governments to better understand the issues that you raise and work together
to find solutions. We will communicate with you again as we learn more about
this matter.
Thank you again for your interest in Samsung Electronics.
Kind Regards,
Alan

I think I just upped the ante ...
... on personal eco-activism: I reported to Gateshead council an incident of suspicious pollution of a stream (for goodness sake it was running GREEN -like someone had poured paint into it) for at least two days over the weekend. It happened here 54.98104,-1.78325 - Google Maps and I sent this reference to them. I also have photos of the water -but I've not yet uploaded them. See what Gateshead environmental protection say...

Nuclear weapons: Global Zero is coming
"out of the spotlight, Global Zero, a new alliance of prominent diplomats, military and civic leaders, is beginning to persuade the nuclear powers that there is only one answer to solve this crisis: the elimination of all nuclear weapons.
Presidents Obama and Medvedev are meeting next week. Let's call on them to put their historic pledge into action and lead global efforts to achieve a nuclear free world. Sign the declaration below and help build a massive citizen call to action. Global Zero leaders will deliver it directly to the Presidents of the US and Russia."

Philips accepts recycling responsibility
They campaigned and it worked. Note that activism can achieve things: VICTORY! Philips accepts recycling responsibility | Greenpeace International: "Philips had been the biggest obstacle in the electronics industry to tackling the growing problem of e-waste. And we have been calling on them since 2007 to stop actively opposing laws that would oblige electronics producers to accept financial responsibility for the recycling of their own products.
After several actions and 47,000 messages from our supporters, the company has finally agreed to our demands. This is a big step forward, and makes Philips a new green leader in the electronics sector."
It's important that these things happen at the level of the producers; too many things devolved to consumers will not happen widely enough because of laziness and cussed contrariness. If we do it right in the first place we won't need to clear up the mess!

BAN CLUSTER BOMBS NOW!
I've just sent a message to government leaders urging a strong ban on cluster bombs. I hope you'll join me. Here's the link:
And here's more info from Avaaz.org:
Final negotiations are underway right now in Dublin, Ireland on a treaty to ban cluster bombs -- but its outcome is in danger.
Cluster munitions don't just kill during war--they scatter small, unexploded "bomblets" on the ground. When children pick them up, they are often maimed or killed. Most governments agree that they should be banned--but many are now trying to weaken the proposed treaty with loopholes, exemptions, and delays.
Negotiations end this Thursday. If enough of us raise our voices, we can drown out the arms manufacturers and convince our governments to do the right thing. Click here to send a message, and then use the box on the page to tell others.
