The Day after Tomorrow

I've been seeing adverts for this already and I gather from this article that it will be trailered with Van Helsing so it's going to get some good publicity. The article referenced seems to think that it would be a good thing for environmentalist recruitment. I'm not so sure. AS the photo ref above indicates, the film's premise is that global warming turns off the gulf stream and causes the onset of a new ice age in the northern hemisphere -and suddenly too.

No while the scenario of cooling is possible [see this article referenced in The Greening Blog] it is likely to be gradual and maximum of 7degrees C, given that over the same period we might have warming of 5degreesC ... in any case we're talking, as I understand it of something that would affect north-western Europe not the whole northern hemisphere. So it might actually turn out to be a bit of an unhelpful overstatement of the dangers from the point of view of sensible debate about climate change; it's an easy reference for skeptics like the Bush administration to lump all concern together and dismiss it as Hollywood hype.

On the other hand perhaps it will enable many of us to talk about the real dangers and possible scenarios ...

"Spend and tax" not "tax and spend"

I got a response from my MP which got me kind of mad. You'll see why as I reproduce it here. Apologies for the strange changes in types...
