A good question and firghtening; especially as I'm investigating how all the crap gets onto my son's WinXp machine: provided we can solve the issue of whether his network connector is linux compatible he's happy to be 'converted' ... basically it takes him longer but about 3 months of use gets his machine knee-deep in spyware, adware and malware ....
Part of the answer is that M$ started out by using software that was produced by the seat of their pants and they've just taken the seat bit off .... so it's just pants, then ...
