I already use a gmail account for specialised work -storing academic articles and the like so I can access them pretty much anywhwer with an internet connection and add to them similarly. This take things a step further by making it appear like you have a drive on your desktop. Works with Windows and all the instructions are here. I'm looking out for a Linux version, of course.

It's not particularly easy to setup though.
I'm far happy to have an actual personal file server connected to our cable connection at home.
